Take it easy at this unique and tranquil getaway. Our Ammunition Wagon was built for the War Department in the closing years of the Second World War. It was used to convey military ammunition and explosives, an extremely dangerous cargo to carry in a wooden wagon behind a hard-working steam engine sending out sparks…

Such wagons would have been particularly in need in the preparations for the D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944, and many British and American-built wagons and other rolling stock followed the first wave of troops over to France to assist with the Allies’ advance towards Berlin.
These days, the Ammunition Wagon offers a much safer and calmer environment for your stay. It includes a double bed, sofa, TV, en-suite shower room/WC, microwave, fridge, multiple power sockets and heating for those chilly winter months. Outside you will find an individual private garden with outdoor seating and a BBQ (bring your own charcoal!), offering a great place to relax over looking the steam railway and surrounding Rother Valley.

The Ammunition Wagon sleeps two adults, plus two on the sofa bed, with allocated parking directly outside.

Take it easy at this unique and tranquil getaway. Our Great Western Railway ‘Toad’ Brake Van dates from 1940 and was one of hundreds which ran on the main line between 1894 and 1968. Ours has been sympathetically converted into a smart, contemporary home from home, with a grandstand view of passing steam trains.

The nickname ‘Toad’ comes from the Great Western Railway’s telegraph code for brake vans, which were attached to the rear of goods trains to allow the guard to apply the brakes where needed and ensure that the train made safe passage. The large ‘Swindon’ sign on the sides denotes its home base.
Lovingly converted with lots of period details, the cosy Toad benefits from full insulation, double glazing and heating.

It also boasts an en-suite WC and shower, double bedroom, fitted kitchen with induction hob and dining area, Freesat TV and an elevated balcony just 20ft away from the station platform with lovely views over the Rother Valley towards Kent.

The Toad sleeps two adults with allocated parking directly outside.
